Earn interest on your EUR balance in Bitcoin

Find out how to earn interest on your EUR balance and have your interest payments automatically converted to Bitcoin

What is the Bitcoin Bonus?

With BTC bonus, you can put your EUR balance to work for you in the 21bitcoin app and, if you wish, automatically convert the interest into Bitcoin.

💡 Here’s how it works: Interest is credited to your EUR balance in EUR by our partner bank. Optionally, you can have each interest payment automatically converted to BTC. Your Bitcoin balance itself does not earn interest.

BTC interest is optional and free: You decide for yourself whether to participate, and you can disable the feature at any time.

How Interest Works

  1. Your EUR balance earns interest. Your EUR balance is held in trust at our partner bank. The bank pays interest on this balance at a variable interest rate.

  2. Interest accrues daily, based on your average EUR balance for the month.

  3. Monthly payment. At the beginning of the following month, the interest is credited to your EUR balance in EUR.

  4. Optional: Conversion to BTC. If you have enabled automatic conversion, each interest payment is converted to Bitcoin immediately afterward.

How to enable Interest

  1. Open the 21bitcoin app and tap the “Activate Interest” card on the home screen

  2. Review the terms and conditions: current interest rate, payout frequency, tax information, and source of the interest

  3. Confirm the terms and conditions.

  4. Optional: Toggle the “Automatically convert to BTC” switch.

ℹ️ Participation is voluntary (opt-in)

Your EUR balance will start earning interest as soon as you activate the feature (by 8:00 p.m. CET on the same day, or the following day if activated later).

Payout in EUR

By default, you receive your interest in EUR:

  • Payments are made monthly to your EUR balance in the app.

  • You’ll see each payment listed as a separate entry titled “EUR Interest Received” in your activity history.

  • The paid-out balance is available to you immediately: to spend, save, or withdraw.

Automatic Conversion to BTC

When the “Automatically Convert to BTC” toggle is enabled, each interest payment is automatically converted to Bitcoin immediately after it is credited in EUR:

  • The conversion takes place as an automatic buy order at the current market price.

  • The purchased Bitcoin will then be deposited into your 21bitcoin wallet—just like any other purchase.

  • You can enable or disable the toggle at any time in the settings. The change will take effect starting with your next payout.

Interest Rate & Calculation

  • The interest rate is a variable annual interest rate (p.a.) set by our partner bank and is subject to change. You can view the current interest rate in the app at any time.

  • Interest is calculated on your average monthly EUR balance using the German 30/360 interest calculation method.

  • You can find all the details about the calculation in the article “Average EUR Balance & Interest Calculation (30/360).”

Interest in your Activities

Depending on your settings, you'll see one or two entries per month in your activity overview:

Content

EUR Interest Received

Always

Interest Amount in EUR, Payment Date

Automatically Converted to BTC

Only if conversion is enabled

EUR Amount Invested, BTC Received, Exchange Rate

In the overview, you can also see how much you've earned in total so far and when your next payment is expected.

Taxes

21bitcoin does not provide tax advice. Interest on your EUR balance is considered investment income and may be subject to tax. The interest is subject to German capital gains tax withheld by the financial institution (capital gains tax plus the solidarity surcharge, currently totaling 26.375%). Church tax is not withheld. The amount credited to the customer is the amount remaining after the withheld taxes have been deducted.

  • The customer is solely responsible for the tax treatment of the forwarded interest, including any credit or refund of withholding tax.

  • The optional conversion to BTC is a standard Bitcoin purchase—the usual tax rules of your tax jurisdiction apply to the purchased Bitcoin.

Disable Interest

You can turn off interest at any time:

  1. Open the Interest Overview in the app

  2. Tap “Deactivate”

  3. Confirm the deactivation

Any interest that has already accrued and been received will, of course, remain in your account. No further interest will accrue after deactivation.
